Minted Flat Lay Challenge Winner: Same Invite, Different Ways
A couple months ago, Minted announced that they were going to be hosting a flat lay challenge for their Wedding Planner Program members (GENIUS since we were all stuck at home anyway…thank you COVID). Basically what that means is that you are a registered wedding planner within Minted Weddings. The perks of this program include a special discount code specific to our company that we are able to give to our clients for discounted wedding stationary from Minted.com (holla if you want/need it). 2020 has been such a weird year and most of our weddings have been moved to next year, so we jumped at the opportunity to get our creative juices flowing.
So, we entered and… WE WON!
Now, to explain how it went down: the way it worked was you registered to participate, then you got sent a Minted invitation suite in the mail, at random. We had no idea what our suite was going to look like in advance. Once we received the suite, we were instructed to create a mood board representative of the “wedding” you were about to do the flat lay for. They encouraged you to use items around your home/office in order to enforce uber creativity.
The suite we ended up getting was super neutral. The first thing I noticed when reviewing it was that it was for a fall wedding in Chicago. This got my engined revved as we do most of our weddings in Arizona and in the fall, it’s still pretty hot but in Chicago, it’s def not hot in the fall. I immediately started brainstorming my design and I knew I wanted it to SCREAM fall. I’ve only been to Chicago once, but I know it’s a rad city full of super cool people. I have these amazing Jessica Simpson heeled leopard print booties that I knew I needed to use for this shoot….thus, High Fashion Hipster Wedding was born (see description and mood board below):
“Our bride and groom both have great style and taste. She works in the fashion industry in Chicago...also where they plan to wed this fall. He is an executive at a NYC based company and KNOWS how to wear a suit. They love date nights filled with dive bars and good music. They love industrial simplicity and a good neutral color palette. They care about the way their wedding looks but their main priority is how their wedding feels. Majority of their budget will go to the custom menu and open bar...these foodies plan to feed their guests well before dancing the night away under the stars. ”
I needed the photo of the flat lay to be more than just a photo though. I needed you to FEEL the flat lay. I needed what you felt to be representative of what the couple would feel looking through their wedding gallery years later. The moody lighting is exactly that. It speaks volumes of the warm love that was felt on this special day. Shoutout to the king of light, Daniel Kim, for helping to show what I wanted you all to feel.

When Daniel and I got together to shoot these flat lays, we weren’t exactly sure what we wanted them to look like…we wanted options. So, I gathered up everything I could think of in our house that could possibly fit the theme (which surprisingly was a lot- AM I A HIGH FASHION HIPSTER?!?!?!?!). We even got crazy and used the record player and I’m obsessed with how those turned out. Keep scrolling to see the same invite styled in many different ways…all with the same theme in mind.
Thank you Minted for coming up with this fun and creative challenge. We had a blast doing it and we are so honored to have won! And thanks DK for being a light magician. #dreamteam
And lastly, shoutout to LANY, John Mayer, and Sam Means for having dope records.
